How Often Should You Get a Massage? A Practical Guide

After a massage appointment, one of the most common questions is:

“When should I come back?”

There is no single schedule that works for everyone.

Some people book Registered Massage Therapy when muscular tension becomes noticeable. Others choose occasional appointments as part of their general wellness routine. Someone actively addressing a particular concern may also choose to book closer appointments for a period of time.

The right frequency depends on your goals, lifestyle, symptoms, response to treatment, and what makes sense for you.

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

The short answer is: it depends on why you are booking.

Massage frequency can be influenced by several factors, including your treatment goals, daily activities, physical activity, stress, current symptoms, and how you responded to previous treatments.

It can also change over time.

For example, someone dealing with a period of increased muscular tension may choose to book appointments closer together initially. If things improve, they may decide to space appointments further apart.

Another person may feel generally well and only choose massage therapy occasionally.

Neither approach is automatically better.

What Are You Trying to Address?

Your treatment goal is one of the most useful places to start.

Someone booking because of persistent neck and shoulder tension from computer work may have different needs from someone booking occasionally for relaxation.

Similarly, a physically active person managing temporary muscle tightness may have different goals from someone who simply enjoys massage as part of their general wellness routine.

Rather than deciding that everyone needs massage every week, every two weeks, or every month, it is more helpful to ask:

What am I trying to get from this treatment right now?

That answer can help guide the timing of your appointments.

What If I Have Ongoing Muscle Tension?

If you regularly experience muscular tension, you may choose to book Registered Massage Therapy more consistently for a period of time.

However, more frequent massage is not automatically better.

Recurring tension can also be influenced by daily habits, workload, physical activity, stress, sleep, movement patterns, and other factors. Massage therapy may be one part of managing those concerns rather than the only strategy.

Your RMT can discuss how you responded to previous treatment and whether the current appointment frequency still makes sense.

If symptoms are changing, worsening, or not responding as expected, the plan may also need to be reassessed rather than simply increasing how often you book.

How Often Should Desk Workers Get Massage?

People who spend long periods working at a computer, driving, studying, or sitting may notice recurring tension around the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Some clients choose periodic RMT appointments because these physical demands repeat throughout their workweek.

There is still no specific massage frequency that every desk worker needs.

Regular movement, changing positions throughout the day, physical activity, and an appropriate workstation setup can also play an important role in managing sitting-related discomfort.

Massage therapy can complement these habits rather than replace them.

What About Active People?

People who exercise regularly may use massage therapy as part of their overall recovery routine or to address specific areas of muscular tension.

How often someone chooses to book may depend on their activity level, training schedule, current concerns, and how they respond to treatment.

A period of heavier activity may lead someone to book differently than they would during a less active period.

There is no universal schedule for active clients, and massage therapy should not be presented as something that must be performed at a certain frequency to prevent injury.

Is Once a Month Enough?

For some people, yes.

Monthly massage is a preference that works well for some clients, particularly those who feel generally well and enjoy periodic treatment.

For someone else, monthly appointments may not match their current goals at all.

The important distinction is that once a month is not a medical standard or an ideal frequency for everyone.

If you feel comfortable and your current schedule matches your goals, there may be no reason to increase how often you book simply because someone else receives massage more frequently.

Can I Get a Massage Every Week?

Some clients may choose weekly appointments for a period of time.

Whether that makes sense depends on the individual, their goals, health history, response to treatment, and the reason they are receiving massage therapy.

Weekly massage is not something everyone needs, and more appointments do not automatically mean better results.

If you are booking frequently, it can be useful to periodically review whether that schedule is still helping you work toward your goals.

Do I Need to Wait Until I Am in Pain?

No.

You do not have to wait until discomfort becomes significant before booking an RMT appointment.

Some people recognize early signs of muscular tension and choose to book before the issue becomes more distracting. Others schedule massage periodically because they enjoy the relaxation or general feeling of the treatment.

At the same time, this does not mean that massage therapy is required to “prevent” future pain.

It is simply one option people may include in their overall approach to health and wellness.

How Should Your Body’s Response Affect Your Schedule?

Your response after treatment can help guide future decisions.

Consider how you felt during the days following your appointment.

Did the area feel more comfortable? Did your movement feel different? Did the treatment match what you wanted to address? Did you experience soreness or another response that should be discussed next time?

Your RMT can use this feedback when considering future treatment.

If something did not feel right, tell them.

If the previous treatment felt too intense, that can be adjusted.

If your concern has improved significantly, you may no longer need the same appointment frequency.

A treatment plan should be flexible.

Should Massage Frequency Change Over Time?

It can.

You do not need to choose one massage schedule and follow it indefinitely.

A person may initially book more frequently while dealing with a particular period of muscular tension, then gradually book less often as their goals change.

Someone else may book irregularly based on their activities or preferences.

Others may simply choose massage occasionally when it feels useful.

Your needs today may not be the same six months from now.

How Can Your RMT Help?

A Registered Massage Therapist can consider your health history, treatment goals, assessment findings, lifestyle, and response to previous treatments when discussing a treatment plan with you.

That does not mean you are required to follow one fixed schedule.

You can discuss whether the recommended frequency fits your goals, availability, and preferences.

If circumstances change, the plan can change too.

At Lisa Wellness in Bronte, Oakville, our goal is to individualize Registered Massage Therapy rather than recommend the same appointment schedule to every client.

A Simple Way to Think About Massage Frequency

Instead of asking, “Should I get a massage every week or every month?” try asking yourself a few broader questions.

What am I booking massage for? Has my concern improved since my previous appointment? How did I respond to treatment? Are my daily activities continuing to contribute to the issue? Does my current appointment schedule still match what I am trying to achieve?

Those questions are often more useful than following a preset calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one massage a month enough?

It can be for some people. There is no standard monthly requirement. The appropriate frequency depends on your individual goals and response to treatment.

Can I get massage every week?

Some clients may choose weekly treatment for a period of time, but weekly massage is not necessary for everyone. Your goals, health history, preferences, and treatment response should all be considered.

Should I only book when I feel sore?

Not necessarily. Some people book when muscular tension appears, while others choose occasional massage for general wellness or relaxation.

Can my RMT tell me how often I should come?

Your RMT can recommend a treatment plan based on your goals, assessment, and response to treatment. That plan should remain flexible and can be adjusted over time.

Finding a Schedule That Works for You

There is no universal answer to how often you should get a massage.

Some people choose appointments closer together for a period of time. Others prefer monthly, occasional, or as-needed treatment.

What matters most is whether the frequency fits your current goals, lifestyle, preferences, and response to treatment.

At Lisa Wellness in Bronte, Oakville, our Registered Massage Therapists can discuss your concerns and help you decide what type of treatment plan makes sense for you.
